History of Valentine’s Day Cards

As you’re browsing the shelves looking for the perfect card that expresses in words just how much your loved one means to you, have you ever thought about when the first Valentines card was sent, what it may have looked like and how they have the changed over the years?

From Emotionscards.com, here is the history of Valentines cards: Valentine’s greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages, when lovers said or sung their Valentines. Written Valentines began to appear after 1400. The oldest Valentine in existence was made in the 1400’s and is in the British Museum. Paper Valentines were exchanged in Europe where they were given in place of Valentine gifts. Paper Valentines were especially popular in England. In the early 1800’s, Valentines began to be assembled in factories. Early valentines were black and white pictures painted by workers in a factory. Fancy Valentines were made with real lace and ribbons, with paper lace introduced in the late 1800’s. By the end of the 1800’s, Valentines wee being made entirely by machine. In 1850, Esther Howland, an American printer and artist was among the first to publish and sell Valentines in the United States. In the early 1900’s a card company named Norcross became one of the first companies to manufacture Valentines. With the exception of Christmas, Americans exchange more cards on Valentine’s Day than any other time of the year.

Whether it’s the paper heart your kindergartener brings home or the intricate lace card from your loved one, Valentine’s Day cards continue to warm our hearts with love. So don’t forget to get your loved ones a Valentines card and keep the tradition going strong.

The 54th Grammy Awards

Who will win “Best Record” of the year? Will it be Adele, Bruno Mars or maybe Katy Perry? What about “Best Pop Vocal Album?” There are so many good artists to choose from. Then there are going to be all the great performances such as The Beach Boys, who will be reuniting for their first time in two decades, playing with Foster the People and Maroon 5. The performances are great only surpassed by the hype of the evening.

The big question of course to start the evening is “What are you wearing?” For some it’s a couture gown, for others such as Lady Gaga it’s a dress made of raw meat. The stars want to make sure they look their best for this memorable night or at the very least want to leave a lasting impression on people. They’re a brand, an identity and they want people talking about them.

So just what does the invitation to music’s biggest night look like? Is it as eccentric as the personalities that attend? It took some searching but we were able to find the actual invitation. And just like the music producers critique the performances we have our opinions on what could have been done differently.

We’re like Simon Cowell but with a pleasant disposition. One thought, tie into the award aspect of the evening, specifically the unveiling of the winner, and put it in an elegant folder which can be opened would create a level of suspense and excitement when revealing the amazing invitation. Ours is a little different, but feel it would leave a lasting impression.

Now how do you generate the same excitement for invitations for your own Grammy party? Here are some of our thoughts and unlike the performance any of the below will be a sure winner.

Fancy Nancy Tea Party

Being in the invitation business, we are always blogging about wedding invitations or stationery. However, we do all kinds of occasions which require invitations. Recently we have been asked to create several "tea party" invitations for little girl birthday parties. For those of you who have little girls, I'm sure you are aware of the storybook character Fancy Nancy; for those of you who do not, I will briefly explain. Fancy Nancy is a sassy, whimsical little girl who has this passionate zest for life. In her small world of tea parties, school, friends and family she maneuvers through with an embellished attitude while she spouts out simple french words such as "merci" instead of "thank you" or "bonjour" instead of "hello". She is a colorful character with flowers, feathers, butterflies and bows in her repertoire, which clearly makes her attractive to little girls. I don't know if the "tea party" trend is contributed to Fancy Nancy, or if little girls just love to "pretend". In any event, I think it is a "merveilleuse" idea for a birthday party!

Elegant Stationery Returns - Wall Street Journal 8/25/2011

This was brought to my attention this morning by my friend's husband. He texted that I should go and grab a Wall Street Journal. Needless to say I did and Wow! A very common question I get asked is..."Hasn't email, social media, texting, etc. hurt the stationery business?" My answer is always the same. "No" I emphatically reply, but I always have the nagging question in the back of my mind..."Has it?, Will it?" I am declaring today that my nagging fear is removed and I am here to state to all you nay-sayers, "Stationery has Returned!!" The Wall Street Journal is confirming my affirmation. If you have any doubts about this subject I highly recommend you picking up, (or going online) to read the article, which is in the August 25, 2011 WSJ. For those of you who are hiding behind email, texts and social media and want to step out into a more personal, elegant, and hands on experience, don't be shy, go grab some swanky note cards and pen your friends a note!

Candy Buffet in the Window!

It has become quite the rage lately to start a candy bar business. When I say candy bar, I don't mean the kind you unwrap and eat like a Hersey Bar. I mean a candy plethora! A tres chic buffet of candy galore loaded in jelly jars, apothecary vases, tiered cupcake stands accompanied with lighting, mirrored displays, gorgeous fabrics, along with ribbon and fun papers to complete the theme. It seems to be a simple concept to many, purchase a bunch of candy throw into jars and vases and voila! However it does take a creative touch and an eye for color and concept to really pull it off successfully. We have recently come across a woman who achieves this tenfold. The name of the company is Sweet Boutique and you can check out her work here or contact her directly at ivanna@sweetboutiquecandy.com She has recently offered to darn our window in a fun festive colorful summer theme of candy. She brought back so many childhood memories with some of the candy that she chose to use. For example creating a lollipop garden with Mike n Ike candies as the ground and using big swirly lollipops to fill the garden. Not to mention it has also drawn in many children of all ages walking past the store window. It is not only a unique sweet treat bu is also candy to the eye. The "candy buffet business" has definitely arrived and is a nice treat for any party, but keep in mind not everyone can pull this off successfully!

Cherished Occasion - 09 “Damask Galore”

One of the most rewarding things about being a part of a couple's special day is watching their dreams come to life. Our favorite wedding planners at My Bellissima introduced us to a customer last year that had a very specific and beautiful vision- a black damask print with green accents.

For the day of stationery, we incorporated her desired design into every piece created, from the menus to the hotel boxes, so they matched perfectly.

Our personal favorites were the flags guests had to wave as the couple exited the ceremony.

Whether you use your favorite color, or perhaps just a print that you fell in love with- a wedding can certainly be tied together perfectly with a little help from a theme, extraordinary planners and of course, great stationery.

Time to Celebrate – 08 “The Royal Wedding”

The wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton is coming up at the end of this month! On Friday, April 29th, the couple will wed at the Westminster Abbey. According to online news sources, they met in college in 2001 and announced their engagement last November (awwww).

The invitations to the wedding made their debut to guests back in February, and luckily a snapshot of one made it's way to the Internet.

The card itself is a 10"x6" thick bright white cardstock with gilded edges. Queen Elizabeth's emblem appears at the top in gold.

Approximately 1,900 invitations were sent to guests ranging from kings and charity leaders to close friends and family.

Our initial thoughts were that the invitations were classic and very simple. But perhaps the reasoning for that is more than traditional alone- after all, who wants to add rhinestones and tie bows for 1,900 invitations?!?!

Etiquette Tips – 07 “Responses on Reply Cards”

Response cards are essential to wedding stationery, but to some future bride and grooms they cause unnecessary stress. Here are some answers to common questions about response cards:

Q: What should my reply by date be?

A: It’s standard to have your reply by date four weeks before your wedding. That way, you can give the venue a head count before your special day, you have some time to contact those who haven’t replied and you can start putting together seating charts.

Q: What is put in the blank if a card says, “will _ attend”?

A: If the guest is attending, they should write the number of guests going: “Will 2 attend”. If the guest cannot attend, they would write the word “not’ on the line. Note: never put an x on the line, it makes your response unclear.

Q: What exactly goes on the M _ line?

A: The names of the people replying. Even if you are not attending, you still need to include your name so they know who is responding. Also, never add anyone on the reply card who was not invited (usually, the inner envelope lists the guests invited). If the guest is a doctor, they can strike out the M and put Dr. If you are inviting a lot of doctors, you can omit the M and just leave a line.

Q: Why is the response card a folded note card?

A: That’s so guests can write special messages for the couple to be. Feel free to congratulate them, and let them know you are excited about the big day! Some response cards don’t have any writing on them besides the reply by date, so be sure to indicate your name and whether or not you can attend.

Q: What wording should I use to ask guests whether or not they are attending?

A: Standard response cards usually say something like “happily accepts” and “regretfully declines”, however now couples are being more creative with their wording, and even including little images (see photo above for some great ideas!)

Q: I need to include my food choices, how do I do that?

A: Keep menu options short and sweet! Filet mingnon is a perfect description (if that’s what it is)- you don’t need to include what sides it’s served with. Also, guests should select an entrée choice for each person attending. For instance, if two people are invited and one wants chicken while the other wants the eggplant, they should write 1 on the chicken selection and 1 on the eggplant selection.

Q: I have people that haven’t responded yet, how do I know if they are coming or not?

A: Call them! If you haven’t received a response from some guests by your response day (unfortunately this seems to be inevitable), you can contact them via phone to confirm their attendance. It is not a good idea to just ‘wait and see if they show up.’

So My Type - 02 “Trajan Pro”

Although it’s extremely important to have an artfully designed invitation, legibility is paramount. After all, how do you expect guests to show up on time (or even at all) if you are using an overly decorated typestyle?

One of our most popular go-to fonts is Trajan Pro, which was created from many years of tweaking Greek column writing.

This all caps font is clear and concise, and delivers messages in a smooth and simple manner.

Trajan pro has been featured in many well-known American images, including the Columbia University logo and the movie poster for Titanic.
